Read how to win in Afghanistan in The Story of the Malakand Field Force by Winston S. Churchill. The Brits did it back in 1897 when Taliban was spelled Talib ul ilms in what is now Northwest Pakistan without helicopters or F16s.

one more book that is worth reading is "Afghanistan The Bear Trap: The Defeat of a Superpower" by by Mark Adkin, Mohammed Yousaf, Mohammad Bear Trap Yousaf

These guys should be making decisions based upon facts, not what some scholar sitting in his cardigan sweater and comfy Washington office think. Those facts should include the guys on the ground. They have a better assessment of the “real” situation than abstract opinions that may or may not be true. Their answer may not be politically convenient, but you’ll probably get pretty close to the truth.
